They said I was too young. They said I didn't look like a district attorney,' said 31-year-old Tiffany Cabán, who declared victory in the Queens District Attorney election race on Tuesday night.
New York civil rights activist Hawk Newsome also celebrated Cabán's apparent success, asserting that he believes the public defender could bring real change to the city.
"I was told that there was a public defender who is a queer Latina that was running for district attorney in Queens. I found this to be quite interesting because it's a rarity to have a serious public defender running for district attorney," he said. "The opposition was saying that she did not care about black and brown people and this is something that we knew to be untrue," Newsome said."That's when we sent a team of 10 to 15 people out daily to knock on thousands of doors. We also stood out in front of train stations with the bull horn which is typical of our actions as Black Lives Matter."
