Jamie Smith used a toothbrush with a blade attached to the end of it

A violent thug launched a frenzied attack where he slashed, bit, and headbutted prison officers after being taken to a Nottingham hospital for treatment. Prisoner Jamie Smith, who had been taken from HMP Lowdham Grange to Queen’s Medical Centre so he could be treated for a hand injury , lashed out at the three prison guards supervising him on January 9, 2025 When prison officers attempted to put him back in handcuffs after a X-ray, the 31-year-old became angry and launched himself at them in a bid to escape custody.

He lunged at one of the officers with an improvised knife and then headbutted and bit another who tried to restrain him. He then used the makeshift weapon, a toothbrush with a blade attached to the end, to slash the second officer on the back of his neck. He was restrained a short time later with the assistance of hospital security teams. Smith later claimed to have picked up the blade on an earlier visit to the toilet at the hospital but also said he had taken it with him. After an investigation by detectives, Smith was charged and pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, attempted wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and attempting to escape custody. At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, April 14, Smith was handed two life sentences, with a minimum term of 12 years. Detective Constable Farhan Dewan-Williams, of Nottinghamshire Police , said: “Smith is an extremely violent offender and this attack on prison staff who were simply doing their job was totally unacceptable. “We work alongside prison service teams to try to prevent attacks on officers and investigate thoroughly when they do take place. 'I’d like to commend the bravery and the professionalism of the prison officers during the incident and throughout the court process. 'I hope this case serves as an example to other prisoners who may consider behaving in this way as it will only lead to further time in jail.”
