A social media threat led to the cancellation of school for about 1,400 students Monday at the 21st Century Charter School’s two locations in Gary.

“We had a threat and we took it seriously enough to close schools,” said Kevin Teasley, founder and president of the Greater Education Opportunities Foundation that operates the schools. He said staffers, students and families saw the post and many teachers called off school. There wasn’t enough staff to secure the building so officials cancelled school and contacted Gary police who are investigating.Teasley said he was informed of the threat by a school security guard who saw the post.

On Tuesday when school resumes, Teasley said the school will be under police surveillance. He said all the schools have locked doors and metal detectors. “You can’t get in without being buzzed in,” he said. 21st Century’s middle and high school is at 1440 E. 35th Ave. and the elementary is at 556 Washington St.

The school asked students and families to alert officials if they have any information about the threat.
