Crowds were treated to a special Lancaster Bomber flyover and wacky downhill races
It was bank holiday Sunday to remember in Stockport as cowboys, aliens and a Freddie Mercury tribute launched themselves down a hill in soapboxes in front of thousands of spectators.
The town's much-anticipated inaugural soapbox derby event, Krazy Stockport took place under glorious blue skies this Sunday , and crowds were treated to a very specialThe free-to-attend event has been two years in the making, with organisers having had great success with the unique and wacky downhill races in cities and towns including Shrewsbury, Northwich and Wolverhampton.
30 amateur teams from local Stockport businesses and organisations entertained crowds with warm-up dances before pushing themselves down the steep Mersey Square hill. A Ghostbuster kart, a Fred Perry shoe and a NHS hospital bed hurtled down the race track navigating chicanes, obstacles and water challenges before finally reaching the finish line.
As the first wave of races came to a conclusion - following a few near misses and one crash just outside The Plaza - crowds prepared for the hotly anticipated Lancaster Bomber flyover. Passing over slightly later than scheduled at 1.12pm, crowds were treated to not one, but three flypasts as it circled landmarks including the Hat Works, Stockport Plaza and the viaduct.
The huge aircraft, played a major role in the Bomber Command during the war, and thousands turned out to see it and enjoy the free-to-attend soapbox event. Other entertainment on the day came in the form of a giant digger in the pit area, plus street food vendors, and the Robinsons Brewery horses.
