A webcam at a remote site in Colorado offers a glimpse of as many as 2,000 rattlesnakes living together in one den.
Scientists from California Polytechnic State University recently put up a webcam on a rattlesnake den found at a remote site in Colorado. Researchers say the den is one of the biggest they've ever seen. This image, provided by Cal Poly, shows snakes in the "mega den." FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A live webcam focused on a “mega den” of rattlesnakes is a viewing bonanza for scientists and the stuff of nightmares for everyday viewers.
“The purpose of this is twofold,” Taylor said. “One is for research. As scientists we can collect data about their behavior without disturbing them, so it’s actually natural behavior. No. 2 is that we can show this to the world. We can show everyone what rattlesnakes are actually like.” Then the camera will give people a chance to see how good rattlesnakes are at caring for their young, Taylor said. Unlike other snakes, rattlesnake mothers protect their young against predators, shielding them with their bodies. They sometimes care for the young of others, too.
