I started losing my hair back in high school when I was 18 years old. I was a cheerleader and track runner, which meant I wore my hair pulled back in tight ponytails regularly. And I mean. If my ponytail wasn’t so tight that my eyes looked slanty, it wasn’t perfect, and I wanted my hair to be perfect.

I felt ashamed, isolated, and consumed by my hair loss. I was depressed, and I felt like I was suffering in silence. It didn’t help that doctors brushed off my hair loss as a cosmetic issue—when, really, my hair loss was taking over my entire life. It affected my relationships and my social life: I’d be too worried about my bald spots to enjoy time with my boyfriend.
