The Hurricane takes an unusual approach to its narrative that succeeds in showing the profound legacy that Carter’s boxing career had. Although there are several flashbacks to his time in the ring, the film opens by showing the young boy Lesra Martin reading up about Carter’s time in the ring as he is taken in by an adopted family. Despite his poor upbringing, Martin quickly proves himself to be a sharp reader with a tremendous sense of empathy.
