Cheryl Loadman says her generation has been fighting for queer rights for decades, and \u0022this is another one of those battles.\u0022

Activate your Online Access NowShe was “absolutely disappointed” to learn about the Saskatchewan government’s decision this week to require schools to seek parental consent when a student under the age of 16 wants to change their name or pronouns.

“This is a really big step backwards in Saskatchewan,” Loadman said. “This is a step in the wrong direction. It pulls away from the recognition that we need to be helping these young folks. Helping them means giving themin the school system, and not have that be restricted by parents who are overstepping in some ways.

“They have this idea that they own their children. In fact, they don’t. This is about the children’s rights, and the children’s need to have support.” While children have many reasons for choosing different names in school — a child enrolled as ‘Elizabeth’ might simply prefer to be called ‘Beth’ or ‘Lizzie,’ or answer to a nickname — Loadman said this policy will have a disproportionate impact on students who are queer, trans or exploring their identity.

“These youngsters are beginning that process of understanding their lives and where they are and what’s going on around them in those really difficult teenage years,” she said. “And now the government has basically said, ‘You can’t go through any of that. That’s not going to happen because, until you’re 16, you have no right to be who you want to be.’ ”There was an error, please provide a valid email address.
