The kits are built in Japan and then shipped over, where FLEX San Diego will install them. The turnaround is several months, and FLEX has the trucks painted after the conversion kits are installed—it's a full-service operation that includes installation.
Let's presume you already have a suitable Tacoma donor truck. FLEX says the kit, shipping, installation, and painting should run $22,000 to $25,000—add in the donor truck, and you're looking at something north of $50,000 out the door. The kit replaces the fenders, hood, fascia and grille, bumper and skid plate with FLEX parts. Given the extensiveness of the kit installation, paint, and bodywork, there's room for additional customization—for an additional cost.
To our eyes, the 100-Series Land Cruiser conversions blend more harmoniously with 1980s FJ style than the more curvaceous Tacoma, but there's no denying that the Windansea is a rugged, purposeful looking thing. FLEX will be bringing the Windansea to this year's L.A. Auto Show, if you're interested in checking them out in person.
