I am a minimally invasive spine surgeon at the Center for Bone and Joint Surgery of the Palm Beaches, and one of approximately 50 women orthopedic spine surgeons in the country. I am an accomplished clinical and basic science researcher, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications, national meeting presentations, and textbook chapters.
The dominant stereotype of a Chief Executive Officer of a large company is a fast talking, extroverted man who has climbed the corporate ranks. This is what I pictured when I first connected with Valeska Schroeder, the CEO of the bone healing tech manufacturer Cerapedics. Even after interviewing so many outstanding women for this column, I still addressed Schroeder as “him” in my first email.
I am excited to be part of a company that is already successful and to help the company grow and scale. The P-15 Peptide that Cerapedics uses in its products to promote bone healing is pharmaceutically manufactured with a distinct mechanism of action not found in any other category of bone graft materials. Our new P-15 Bone Graft product is currently being evaluated for use in lumbar interbody fusion and has been granted a Breakthrough Device Designation by the FDA.
One of the most interesting parts of my job is to hear from a variety of stakeholders. I have a meeting with a group of doctors today and it is great to hear how they are using our product. I also engage frequently with patients and payors.I am new to the spine industry. I think everyone in life has met someone with back pain or leg pain, and they are looking for different solution. The path of progression can be long and painful. Spine is a place that still needs solutions.
