As speculation continues if there is still an energy role for Gov. Mike Dunleavy to serve in President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration, the governor and Alaska’s congressional delegation is reacting to Trump’s recent leadership picks.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - As speculation continues if there is still an energy role for Gov. Mike Dunleavy to serve in President-elect Donald Trump ’s incoming administration after North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was announced as the Interior Secretary-nominee, the governor and Alaska’s congressional delegation are reacting to Trump’s recent leadership picks.

Before Trump’s Interior announcement, during a Fox News interview, Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, expressed support for Dunleavy and optimism for whomever the choice was, saying Alaska would thrive under President-elect Trump’s Administration. Sullivan responded more moderately than other lawmakers, some of whom have heavily criticized some early picks, including his attorney general-nominee,

Some lawmakers are also concerned Gaetz is highly unqualified for the position since — unlike previous attorneys generals — he has never been a prosecutor, government attorney, or judge. When asked about the pick, Sullivan said he had never met Gaetz but knew he served on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“He and President Trump talked a lot about issues that a lot of Americans care about. You just didn’t really hear a lot about this movement on healthy Americans, this movement on chronic diseases,” Sullivan said. “This is the kind of outside thinking that I think can kick bureaucracies into motion. So again, I think there’s a lot of notion about big change, and we’re starting to see with some of these Cabinet picks.
