In 1957, producers at the British Broadcasting Corporation decided to test the willful ignorance of their viewers. The idea was to see how quickly people would buy into pure fantasy if it is what they wanted to believe. On April Fools Day, a respected broadcaster narrated footage of a family harvesting spaghetti from trees. The fictional family was trying to produce the perfect texture and length of pasta and indeed, were suggesting that spaghetti could, literally, grow on trees. The next day, television stations across Great Britain were flooded with calls from viewers with questions about how to start cultivating spaghetti trees of their own.
