The 21st century has delivered plenty of excellent horror storytelling, including these 20 selections representing the best the century has to offer for Halloween season.
This weekend brings the 20th Halloween of the 21st Century, closing out two decades of annual scares and cinematic horror offerings for the holidays. To celebrate, here are the top 20 best horror movies of the 21st century for Halloween viewing.Notice, this isn’t just the top 20 best all-around horror films of the first two decades of the new century. This list includes movies specifically curated to provide the best horror films of the century that are ideal for celebrating Halloween.
It was tough to cull the titles down to just 20, and to focus not only on quality designating these films among the all-around greatest quality in horror cinema from the century, but also specifically the best-quality films that are also the best of the bunch for the holiday. I started out with a list of 85 films from 2001 through 2021, which was then pared down to 50 titles. Then came the slower process to cut it down to 25, and finally those final toughest choices to get it down to just 20. I forced myself to cut several of my personal favorites from the list, since they didn’t meet the latter requirement as well as other contenders did.
I also chose to limit how many films from any given franchise to include, as well as trying not to lean too much toward any one particular type of film or subgenre. For example, the sequelis one of the greatest horror films ever made, but I only included the first film since they are equals and I wanted to have just one to represent the franchise here.
