The Terminator's ending has caused controversy due to a seeming paradox involving Kyle Reese and John Connor, but it's actually not a problem.
The Terminator's ending has long been criticized as being paradoxical, but this ending paradox actually isn't as big of a problem as it's made out to be. It's impossible to have a major time travel franchise like the Terminator movies without some inconsistencies. After all, time travel is one of the most complex sci-fi concepts in existence, it's impressive that any franchise can tell a semi-coherent story using the gimmick.
The Terminator Ending Paradox Explained With the various retcons and confusing timelines of the later movies in the Terminator franchise, the ending of the original The Terminator has changed. That's not to mention Terminator: Dark Fate, which ignored the sequels after Terminator 2: Judgment Day and reset the timeline to where it was after the 1991 sequel.
Since the ending of The Terminator involves time travel, it was understandably scrutinized, with many viewers pointing out what seems like a paradox. The ending of the original film raises an important question: who is the father of the original timeline's John Connor? If John Connor was alive in 2029 to send Kyle back, and Kyle's time travel led to John's conception, he shouldn't be around to give Kyle the order to protect Sarah in the first place.
There's nothing biological about Kyle Reese that requires his involvement in John Connor's birth. After all, if Kyle wasn't around, the original John Connor probably would have just sent someone else back in time to protect Sarah Connor. Because of this, it also could be the case that Sarah was the mother of the original John, with the father being another non-time traveler.
