Rain cancels U.S. men's clay court tennis matches, but fashion show goes on at River Oaks Country Club
Gary Fountain/ContributorWednesday's and Thursday's dreary forecasts may have canceled matches for players of the 2023 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships at River Oaks Country Club. However, it did not thwart attendance at either respective luncheon. The annual fashion show presented by Tootsies marched on.
There were a few thoughtful changes. Instead of the traditional guest gift — umbrellas, straw tote bags and beach towels — sponsors, including Tootsies owners Donna and Norm Lewis and Tenenbaum Jewelers owner Tony Bradfield, donated Second Servings instead. The non-profit organization rescues edible, surplus food for redistribution in food deserts and under-served Houston communities.
The biggest"get" of all, of course, are still the Lexus Pavilion bracelets. Rain or shine, that accessory remains the most coveted item of the week. Tiffany-blue"Thursday" wristlets were passed gleefully to a select few. Fashion had better luck. This year's"Beautiful Hues"-themed show celebrated pink, blue and purple. The looks were overtly feminine. No dark colors or"corporate" attire was shown. Armanious styled ensembles for Houston's women with wildly full social calendars. There was a plethora of event-wear from Oscar de la Renta, plus vacation-ready dresses from Staud and others.
