I use behavioral science to figure out why we do what we do — especially when it comes to poor health decisions.

The traditional five-day workweek focusing on being"in the office" is undergoing a significant shift, and we’re yet to see what system of work for knowledge workers will prevail. But one work pattern that is emerging is the idea of a “gentle Friday .” This gentle Friday is an unspoken agreement among colleagues to just…not expect too much from a Friday ., and expert on workplace trends, discusses Friday ’s new identity and what combination of factors might have led us there.

Friday is shifting again — and there are some new unspoken rules governing how we use that day. Take meetings, for example. “If someone now put in a big meeting on your Friday afternoon, I suspect you would do anything you could to get out of it,” says Daisley. “But there was a time just a few years ago when I used to have the big company meeting of the week on our Friday afternoon.” For many, it’s a day to catch up on a few tasks in the morning, and then simply monitor email in the afternoon.

Daisley suggests that the social aspect of Fridays may be missing in the current remote work environment, potentially impacting workplace culture. “If I tried to gather everyone together at 4:30 on a Friday — even virtually — that would be a no-go area.” Perhaps over time, this slower day will turn into an unofficial “no work” day — thus creating a four-day work week in practice if not on paper.Daisley believes that Fridays are unlikely to return to their pre-pandemic status as a full day in the office for most workers. He acknowledges that some companies may attempt to enforce a return to the office on Fridays but predicts that such efforts are likely to be met with resistance.
