Just 84 of Habitat for Humanity’s 2,100 affiliates received charitable grants from Scott, and the national office doesn’t know what metrics Scott used to choose those recipients. The story is the same at nearly a dozen other groups.
In this March 4, 2018, file photo, then-MacKenzie Bezos arrives at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills, Calif.Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is giving away a lot of money. And she’s giving it away fast. In a little over two years, she’s unloaded $12.8 billion to more than 1,200 organizations. Some of her biggest donations have something in common: They went to large national nonprofit organizations with local affiliates spread across the country.
“It came out of the sky. They went through our budget, how we were impacting the community, the number of seniors we were serving,” says Brent Wakefield, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Diego. “All they wanted to know was that we were overstretched during the pandemic.” That’s why, later that year, Scott’s $4.5 million donation made a huge difference, Wakefield says. A representative from consulting firm Bridgespan, which works with Scott on her philanthropy, reached out to Wakefield out of the blue.
The only public communication about Scott’s giving comes from semi-annual posts on the blogging platform Medium. There, in December 2020 she wrote that her team identifies potential recipients and does their own due diligence to pick which nonprofits get money from her.
“We do all our own fundraising, we’re our own 501c3 [nonprofit entity],” says Christopher Berini, Chief Advancement Officer for United Way Bay Area. “We’re happy to be a member of the network and use the shared brand, but MacKenzie’s support felt personal to United Way Bay Area.” United Way Bay Area received $20 million from Scott in December 2020.
