.vcunningham, Helen_E_Shaw, and Alex_Lily on the best plays they saw in 2022, many of which delighted in the spoken word.
“Hamlet.” I found it . . . challenging to enjoy. It was a show that was built originally around Andrew Scott, and then his replacement Alex Lawther—whom I’ve enjoyed so much on television—seemed wan and a little floppy. He played him as a Hamlet who whines and seems prone to getting bullied. So, for me, it felt like a show that had changed its main component, but the show itself had not changed, so we were left with a very erotic, modern Hamlet without an erotic, modern figure at its center.
And so the second act starts, and it gets to the nastier parts of Hamlet’s makeup, which are there in the text—his misogyny, the way he treats Ophelia. And there’s a moment when he’s physically manhandling Ophelia in this production in a way that I had not seen done. To me, the joy of sitting through that production was a kind of critical joy.
