There are various schools of thought on the metaverse. Maximalists argue that it can be everything—that we can effectively work, play, exercise, shop and network in VR, coming up for air once in a while to complete mundane tasks like showering or sleeping. Moderates say the metaverse is essentially an extension of the internet, a blockchain-powered virtual space for browsing, gaming and social media.
The OMA3 opposes walled-garden metaverses, fighting the corner of users who hope to get the most out of their virtual land, decentralized identities and digital tokens by being able to move seamlessly from one portal to the next. The interoperable characters/avatars working group, for example, enables “the use of characters across multiple platforms,” increasing the incentive for users to “invest time and money in sophisticated avatars that don’t have to be recreated for every application, while projecting a consistent persona.”.
