Upon returning from his deployment to Iraq, Akshay Nanavati struggled with alcohol abuse and was even on the verge of suicide when he decided to find an outlet.

He took up running while in Iraq, but upon returning from his deployment, Nanavati fell back into a state of struggle with alcohol abuse and was even on the verge of suicide when he decided to find an outlet. While Alaska was still deep into its winter months, it was the perfect location for Nanavati to train for his next challenge: a solo trek across Antarctica on cross-country skis.

The journey is set to begin this coming November, which will take him from the Bay of Whales on the Ross Ice Shelf, through the South Pole, before ending at Berkner Island. The 1,700-mile trek also comes with a hefty price tag of $750,000 which he is largely funding through sponsorships and aNanavati wasted no time while in Alaska. Nearly every day he put on his polar gear, strapped skis to his feet, and towed a sled filled with sandbags all across Big Lake.
