Justin Chang reviews Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito.
Coppola’s protagonist is a controversial architect and designer named Cesar Catilina , who has the ability to pause time. “Time, stop!” he says, and everything freezes: people, cars, the clouds in the sky, even the crumbling of a public-housing development that was being demolished on Cesar’s own orders. But his supernatural powers are limited. Eventually, he must allow time to start up again, with a reluctant snap of his fingers.
Coppola first conceived of “Megalopolis” in the early eighties, hoping to follow “Apocalypse Now” with something comparably epic. But the project was scuppered by the critical and commercial failure of “One from the Heart,” in 1982, after which a series of escalating personal and professional crises kept “Megalopolis” on the backburner for decades: actors came and went, and 9/11 forced a serious rethink of the material.
