The photographer Clifford Prince King is a scenarist of the world of gay Black men, dstfelix writes. This March, buttmagazine, which stopped publishing a decade ago, relaunched with one of his images on the cover.
When I first become drawn to an artist, I try to delay seeking any biographical information. I like to lodge for a while in the realm of sensation and conjecture, to postpone the intrusion of “context.” This was how, for many months, I slowly entangled myself with the creations of the photographer Clifford Prince King, a scenarist of the world of gay Black men. I say “scenarist” because King’s photographs strike as written scenes.
So, too, is “Our Last Blunt Together,” which may be, as the title suggests, the story of a breakup. In the picture, the feeling of rupture is intensified by form. A hand, reaching up from the bottom of the frame—presumably belonging to the photographer—holds a blunt to the lips of a man reclining in bed. The man is gazing out forlornly, but it’s hard to read his expression, as his face is partly obscured by the hand.
