María was reportedly underwater for approximately three minutes, and after surfacing and struggling to stay afloat in a maelstrom of water and debris, she miraculously found her eldest son, Lucas. Clinging to a tree as the relentless current surged, María and Lucas struggled to remain above the waterline until it subsided.
