Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy didn't quite hold up to the book, but Martin Freeman's spot-on portrayal of Bilbo Baggins is the exception.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Tolkien's Bilbo Baggins is a unique hero in the world of fantasy, and actor Martin Freeman perfectly captured his mannerisms in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy. The character was first introduced in live-action by actor Ian Holm in Jackson's Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and he made it easy for audiences to fall in love with the character.
9 Freeman Perfected The Cozy Lightheartedness Of Hobbits There's something deeply heartwarming about the Shire, and this has everything to do with the Hobbits who live there. They are described as loving anything to do with things that grow and delight in bountiful meals and smoking pipeweed. Not just any actor could look so at home in such a world, but Freeman managed it perfectly.
6 Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Was Irritable Something that makes Bilbo different from Hobbits like Frodo and Sam is his irritability. There's something of a crotchety old man hidden within the character. He is irritable with the Dwarves' behavior when they burst into his home, and this continues throughout the entirety of the story. The problem with this quality is that it could easily make Bilbo unlikeable, especially without the added context that books can provide.
4 Freeman’s Delight During The Riddle Battle Was Exactly As Tolkien Described Bilbo's cleverness was his greatest attribute, and the riddle battle with Gollum was when this shined through. Though the Hobbit was terrified of the creature threatening to eat him, he was also deeply intrigued by the game. Riddles are something of a pastime in the Shire, so the fact this wound up being key in Bilbo's acquisition of the One Ring cannot be overstated.
