CLEVELAND, Ohio – I’ve been extra grateful for my friends lately. They know this because I’ve sent a lot of texts telling them so.
I’ve always thought of friendships as living things requiring care and investment. Like houseplants. If I forget to water my waffle plant, it goes all drama on me and wilts, as if dead. Fortunately, waffle plants are resilient, and after giving it some water, it springs back, as if nothing was ever wrong.
Embarrassment led to intense concentration, and I passed the final test with a perfect score. We were both amazed. And then I was done. I had lost my edge. Confidence in myself and trust in car drivers had dwindled into fear. My riding days were over.
