A Michigan jury deemed Aretha Franklin's handwritten will, discovered in a couch at the singer's home, to be her final wishes.

Instead, the validity of these discovered wills has been debated over the past several years, pitting Franklin’s children against one another and casting doubt on who inherits what from the legendary musician’s estate, and under what conditions. In the 2010 will, for example, Kecalf and Edward would be required to take business classes before they could collect from the estate.
The 2010 will was notarized, but neither will has listed witnesses. Franklin signed all 11 pages of the 2010 will, but not the shorter 2014 will, which clocks in at a mere four pages and features, in at least one place, a happy face doodle taking the place of Franklin’s first name instead of a full signature.
