Teen Vogue spoke with jduffyrice about unearthing the history of Mount Meigs, creating her first podcast, and what the history of abuse of Black children in schools can teach us about our contemporary educational culture. ⬇️

; people are going to prison at 16 and never leaving until they die. We have to really ask the question: What is the point of an institution like Mount Meigs or any reform school? Because clearly, it’s not to rehabilitate these kids. It’s to punish them and that hasn’t changed. Why were you drawn to podcasting as a format rather than writing, which is what you were used to?This project was always going to be a podcast since before I came on, so I didn’t really have a say in the form.

I really love how integral sound was to this project. It’s one thing to read the alumni talk about what they went through as kids, but it’s another thing to really hear them. I especially loved talking to Denny Abbot, a white probation officer who became a whistleblower, about his experiences. I think his testimony came alive in a way it maybe wouldn’t have on the page.
