The Flash season 9 could reportedly end the series with a shorter number of episodes than past seasons. The Flash premiered on The CW in 2014 as a spinoff of the series Arrow focusing on forensic scientist Barry Allen and his friends as he protects Central City from various villains under the name The Flash. The series has been a consistent hit for the CW, for its mix of classic Silver Age comic book storytelling and melodrama, and has gained a passionate fanbase.
After almost a decade, The Flash has lost various stars with the recent announcement that long-time season regular Jesse L. Martin would leave the series following season 8 following other original series regulars Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh. Star Grant Gustin renegotiated to return for The Flash season 9, which would make The Flash the longest-running series in the Arrowverse beating out Arrow which ran for eight seasons.
The Flash having a shortened final season that would fall in line with Arrow, which had a short final season of 10 episodes as opposed to the traditional 23. A shortened final season of The Flash would allow the creative team to tell a more focused story for Barry Allen to conclude his series.
The other interesting note is if The Flash season 9 is the final season, it will be concluding just ahead of the release of The Flash movie from Warner Bros. which is set for release on June 23, 2023. It will be an interesting road for the Flash character, as The Flash movie was announced in October 2014 just a week after The Flash television series premiered on The CW.
