Two Oregon fishermen returned home after an Alaskan fishing trip, but their hefty catch didn't come back with them.
FastCast morning digital headlines for Monday, Aug. 26, 2024.ANCHORAGE, Alaska - It’s a situation anglers dread: frozen fish, a diverted plane and a ticking clock that inevitably ends with melted ice and thawed, rotten halibut.
Vic Scaravilli and Shawn Snoozy enjoyed their yearly fishing trip to Alaska and flew home to Oregon on Aug. 17.“The fish is just spoiled,” Scaravilli said over Zoom. The friends say they were with a group returning from a fishing trip in Petersburg on that Saturday when their flight to Seattle was diverted.“Fifty pounds at approximately $25 a pound — that’s $1,250 just in halibut costs,” Scaravilli said, “Let alone shrink wrapping and everything else.”Altogether, the pair says that Alaska Airlines lost 2,000 pounds of frozen fish from that one flight.
“While at least one guest was able to pick up their four boxes of frozen fish at the lack of freezing facilities at the airport and the time required for transportation to SEA caused the remaining fish to spoil. We understand our guests’ disappointment in losing fish caught during special fishing trips and strive to connect perishables such as fish with our guests quickly and safely.
“We recommend that you package raw meat and seafood so it is able to withstand a minimum of 48 hours in transit without refrigeration,” the company’s website says.“I think it’s just a total waste,” Snoozy said. “just the idea of all these fish that, you know, we harvested, and they just seemed to not care about it and let it go to waste. That’s what I’m really upset about it.”
