One disturbing scene from The Exorcist was even worse in the book. The 1973 film is regarded as one of the scariest horror films of all time, and with good reason. The Exorcist is filled with disturbing scenes used to tell the story of a 12-year-old girl named Regan, who is possessed by a demon. Some of the most terrifying scenes include Regan's head spinning around, her throwing up on Father Karras, and killing Priest Merrin.

However, in the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, the scene was even more disturbing, and it's no surprise filmmakers decided to censor it.
The Exorcist's Crucifix Scene Is Way Worse In The Book In the book, Regan's crucifix moment goes even further. The scene was extended and much more graphic. It even included a point where Regan had an orgasm while also severely injuring herself. This would have been quite difficult to watch on screen and would have been extremely uncomfortable for the actors to film since Linda Blair, who played Regan, was only 14 years old at the time.
Why The Exorcist Movie Changed The Crucifix Scene The filmmakers behind The Exorcist made the correct decision in censoring the scene. It was likely written out because Regan is 12 years old in the story. Sexualizing a child would not have been acceptable at any time period but certainly wouldn't go over well with modern-day audiences.
