In the 1940s, you could fly to Lake Tahoe, though crashes were common and the runway was too step for most planes. But hey, it had a casino. Here's the scoop.

So in 1946, the Lake Tahoe Sky Harbor Airport opened, allowing wealthy northern Californians to fly to Lake Tahoe in about 55 minutes. Considering the developers likely saw the airport along the lines of a money-making, fly-in casino opportunity more than a social service, the airport was hastily built with little consideration for safety standards.

In mid-August of 1947, a man received critical injuries after he overshot the runway during landing; it was the third Tahoe crash in 10 days, the Peninsula Times Tribune noted. Only 15 days before, a couple from San Jose reportedly “escaped death” when their plane crashed and was completely destroyed during a landing attempt, reported the Sacramento Bee.
