It's time to plant the summer pots, hanging baskets, and window boxes, so here are some tips on how to do it and which plants to use.
Updated: May. 17, 2024, 4:05 p.m.Hanging baskets are good ways to add "spot color" to the landscape.Gone are the days when people filled their front garden beds with flats of annual flowers to create a summer-long carpet of color.On the other hand, most people want at least some color in the landscape – especially out front or around the front entrance.
Because baskets and window boxes in particular are placed in “up” locations, a pleasing look is plants that grow down. Starting with the Wave series almost 30 years ago, breeders have improved petunias so much that they deliver a trailing ball of color all season with little care. These three species are so impressive that they’re almost the exclusive choice these days in the baskets that many towns use to adorn their street lights.
Houseplants with trailing habits can be grown outdoors as basket or pot plants in summer, then repotted and moved back inside for the winter.: tradescantia or “inch plant.” Previously known as “wandering Jew,” this viner has gorgeous variegated leaves of green, creamy silver, and pinkish-purple. Like most houseplants doing double duty, it prefers being in shade outside.
‘Angelina’ is an excellent gold-leafed example, ‘Atlantis’ has bright green-and-white leaves, and the Sunsparkler series has options with bluish and burgundy-tinted leaves.
