The Best Places to Go for Afternoon Tea in London feat theritzlondon sketchlondon aquashard PetershamN brigitsbakery

Afternoon tea is a British tradition dating back to the 19th century when the Duchess of Bedford started inviting her friends to join her for 4pm tea and cake to fill the gap between lunch and dinner. London is known for having some of the best places in the world to enjoy this afternoon meal of tea, sandwiches, cakes, and scones. If you’re taking a trip to the capital make sure you take time to experience traditional afternoon tea.

We’ve rounded up some of the best places to go for afternoon tea in London from traditional hotels to some more unique locations. Whether you’re planning on celebrating a special occasion, or just want to give yourself a little treat, you won’t be disappointed at the spread on offer at these top five venues.Afternoon tea has been served at The Ritz hotel since 1906, and it’s still the classic option, popular with foreign tourists and London socialites alike.

Tea is served five times a day in the Palm Court – a spectacular salon set between two palm trees and decked out with ornate mirrors, golden statues, and opulent chandeliers. A pianist, harpist, or string quintet adds to the ambience, and a soprano singer performs every Tuesday and Thursday evening. As the only hotel in the UK to have a certified Tea Sommelier, the Ritz offers 18 types of loose-leaf tea, and there’s the option of champagne too. The food selection includes sandwiches with a variety of fillings, freshly baked raisin and plain scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, and a selection of teacakes and pastries. Birthday cakes are available on request.

There is a formal dress code, and men must wear a jacket and tie. Jeans and sportswear are prohibited. You must reserve a table in advance and afternoon tea at The Ritz is usually booked up as much as 12 weeks in advance.
