Every day, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities converge on The Arc San Francisco , where many participate in classes and other activities, and others turn right around and go out to museums, libraries, parks, volunteering opportunities and more.

One of the things for which The Arc SF is best known, Pedersen said, is getting participants into jobs. Numerous companies such as Salesforce, Airbnb, the law firms Hanson Bridgett and Morrison Foerster and the California Academy of Sciences have employed people from the organization in internships on up to full-time positions.

Short staffing, in turn, has been the primary reason for an 18-month waiting list for people to enter the program, Pedersen said. “It’s fun. It’s a place where other people can come and hang out and be with each other and hang out and do art,” said Holt, who comes to the center five days a week from the apartment she shares with her father in Chinatown.
