'The Accidental Getaway Driver' hides an emotional story about two men within a crime story. Our Sundance2023 review:
Sometimes you read a story in the news, and you just know that someone is going to make a movie out of it. This was the case for the story that inspired The Accidental Getaway Driver, a story that starts in the neighborhood of Little Saigon in Orange County. The Accidental Getaway Driver follows an old man named Long, played by Hiệp Trần Nghĩa, who works as a driver.
Visually captivating, the story at the heart of the film is one about connection. Both Long and Tây are Vietnamese immigrants who have gotten the short end of the stick in life. A far cry from the stereotypical trope of a model minority, these two men represent characters we haven't seen before on screen. Long is a lonely man. He's a war veteran and a survivor of prison camps in Vietnam. He's estranged from his children and his wife, having spent 20 years apart from them.
With Tây, he finds a sort of kinship. Tây was incarcerated for selling drugs, among other crimes, but at his heart is a good man. While his accomplices treat Long like a hostage, Tây bonds with the old man through their shared language. Although it gradually becomes more overt, Tây's interactions with Long speak to both of their upbringings, with the younger man being respectful and looking out for the older one.
