War movies have been a thing in Hollywood for over 100 years, and have been a subject of fascination for many moviegoers since. With hundreds of wars throughout human history, there's certainly no shortage of topics to make a film about, and the movie industry is unlikely to ever run out of material in this regard. 9 'Letters from Iwo Jima' Directed by Clint Eastwood Letters from Iwo Jima is actually an American film directed by Clint Eastwood, but it is a movie shot almost entirely in Japanese, and starring Japanese actors. As the name implies, the movie is about the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the final battles of the Second World War. The main characters are a group of Japanese soldiers drafted into the war, who write about their experiences in letters, sending them home to their loved ones.
Bruno Ganz was commended for his performance as the leader of the Third Reich, perfectly embodying the suppressed rage, hatred, and paranoia that Hitler was infamous for. The best part of the movie is seeing the situation get worse and worse for the Nazis, with the realization that they are about to lose coming closer and closer. It's satisfying, yet somehow harrowing at the same time, because it shows how hopeless the situation was in the end.
The rest of the film stays with Szpilman, logging the events of his life as he witnesses the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, and the end of the war, though very little of this is seen as a happy occasion. Szpilman is a figure that was put through Hell at the hands of the Nazis, and his extraordinary story deserved to be told. The Pianist was the perfect film to tell this heartbreaking story, and is a shining example of quality and tragedy in the war movie genre.
