Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction, the school confirmed Monday to NBC News. NCAA rules prohibit athletes, coaches, and athletic department personnel from betting on college or professional sports.
In 2025, Division I schools also voted to rescind a rule that would have allowed betting on pro sports. According to the NCAA’s rules, “players who wager on their own games” could face permanent loss of eligibility in all sports. Sorsby could appeal a potential ban. The NCAA has not immediately returned a request for comment by NBC News.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health. ” Through a spokesperson, Texas Tech said it is “committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.
” The school said it would have no further comment to “protect the integrity of the recovery process. ” Sorsby, 22, began his collegiate career at Indiana, and left the school after two years. He spent the last two seasons at Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech in January. Sorsby was highly recruited when he entered the transfer portal, and was considered a prospect for next year’s NFL Draft.
In his final season at Cincinnati, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also ran for 580 yards and nine more scores.
