Southwest Airlines experienced some operational challenges at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
AUS continues to see long lines at security checkpoints this morning due to an earlier issue w/ an airline ticket counter. If you have a flight this morning, please arrive early to get through security. We sincerely apologize and hope to get everyone through as soon as possible. The airport tweeted that there were lines at security checkpoints this morning, and advised passengers to arrive early. Some passengers tweeted travelers standing outside the airport.
“In addition to issues at an airline ticket counter, a piece of baggage security screening equipment was temporarily offline and may have contributed to some of the delays,” said Bailey Grimmett, spokesperson at Austin-Bergstrom Airport. “Operations have been normal since around 10 a.m. this morning.”
Patricia Mancha, spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, said on June 15, TSA officers screened over 2.7 million travelers through airport security checkpoints nationwide, with high volumes of travelers expected to continue throughout the holiday weekend with Father’s Day and Juneteenth.
“TSA recommends that travelers arrive at airport security checkpoint two hours prior to domestic flights and three hours prior to international flights,” Mancha said. “Our officers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continue to work with airport and airline partners to plan, schedule staff and ensure they meet the needs of the traveling public.”
She said TSA is also installing new airport security screening equipment in Austin called analogic computed tomography x-ray systems.
