Texas has ended the requirement for annual car inspections, potentially leading to increased insurance rates in the long run. While the immediate impact on insurance is unclear, experts warn that drivers now bear the responsibility of maintaining their vehicles' safety features.
annual car inspections will no longer be required in the state of Texas . Experts say the new rule may not have an immediate impact but in the long run, it could drive up insurance rates. You're not required to do these inspections anymore, inspections that would have targeted things like the brake system, the lights or mirrors, tires, all of that type of thing,” said Chris Schafer, Senior Editor with Insurify.
Schafer said Texas is one of the last states to get rid of car inspections, already, most states don’t require them. So far, Schafer said there hasn’t been a big change to insurance rates in Texas, due to the new rule. “It's putting much more of that vehicular maintenance on the owners themselves, and it's kind of up to you to continue to monitor your vehicle and make sure that it is safe and drivable, because you're not going to have that constant reminder to force you to go in and get it,” said Schafer. It is important to remember that although you won’t need to pass a car inspection, you can still get pulled over and fined for things like no working head or brake lights, no side mirrors, no seatbelt, illegal tint, or a severely damaged windshield. “Could the law lead to more accidents because people are not continually doing the upkeep of safety features on their vehicles,” said Schafer. Although it’s not likely to be pulled over for bad brakes or old tires, Schafer said it’s important to upkeep your vehicle to prevent accidents that could drive up insurance rates. “Whether we see car insurance prices go up in the future as a result of brake systems that weren't checked, or horns or things like that, leading to more accidents that's possible,” said Schafer. Drivers still pay the $7.50 fee when they register their vehicle. The new name for that fee is the Inspection Program Replacement Fee
