Interim head coach Rodney Terry and a group of veterans have helped the 10th-ranked...

Since taking over as Texas' acting head coach, Rodney Terry has guided the Longhorns to a 6-1 record, including a 2-1 start in Big 12 play.AUSTIN — Texas players felt like most everyone else who’d learned coach Chris Beard was arrested during the early hours of Dec. 12 and charged with felony family violence for allegedly strangling, biting and bruising his fiancée.This was ugly news, the sort with the power to transform the lives of Beard, fired by Texas on Jan.

It helped to have Rodney Terry around to take command of the situation. The team’s associate head coach had always been referenced as the “co-head coach” around the program — even by Beard — and had previously been a head coach at Fresno State and UTEP before joining Beard’s staff in April 2021. Terry was critical as a stabilizing force on Dec. 12 and has been every day since. It’s why the university applied the interim tag to him for the remainder of the season. But without the players banding together and pooling their wisdom and energy, the 10th-ranked Longhorns could have easily derailed.

“We always talk about control what you can control. So after we kind of got over the initial shock of what was going on, we just kind of banded together and said, ‘Look, we’re still the same team, and we still have the same goals. Nothing’s going to change.’ ”
