Tuesday, November 5, 2024 1:54PMThe DOJ said it would send monitors to eight Texas counties, including Harris and Waller, to monitor for compliance with federal civil rights laws, but Texas Republicans say it's not needed.Overnight, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the Biden-Harris administration to prevent federal election monitors from showing up at polling sites.
Federal election monitors will be in Harris County after Democratic lawmakers asked them to come, but Republicans are giving pushback. The Texas Secretary of State says new Texas laws prohibit federal monitors from entering polling sites. "I think the secretary of state is not looking for a big fight here," Rice University political science professor Bob Stein said. "These are legal battles that can be extremely expensive, time-consuming, and they actually can slow down elections."
