Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn popped up on the team’s injury report on Wednesday with a right groin injury that limited his participation. Special teams coordinator Frank Ross said Thursday that the team’s only kicker is “just working through” late-season “soreness.”

Such a prognosis doesn’t suggest Fairbairn will miss Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. The Texans have also not yet made any transactions to acquire another kicker. Fairbairn is in the middle of his most accurate season in six years with the franchise. He has made 91.3 percent of his field goal attempts, including all three attempts of 50-plus yards, and he’s made all 15 of his extra-point attempts.

Houston’s special teams units have been the most proficient components of the rebuilding franchise in 2022. But the Texans made two uncharacteristic blunders that proved costly in their 27-14 loss to the Browns last Sunday. Punt returner Desmond King lost a fumble that produced a Browns field goal, and Donovan Peoples-Jones returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown to give Cleveland its go-ahead lead in the second quarter.

“Missed tackling in space,” Ross said of the surrendered score. “Just everything working together as a unit. Leveraging coverage, getting off single blocks and missing tackles. Do what you can, right? Just next week, come back up, practice some tackling, overemphasize those points and just make sure we know as a group our standards are higher than that and try and eliminate those mistakes when possible.
