From the April 1981 issue of Car and Driver.Weird-car buyers have been faced with a fundamental choice for years: should they settle for one of the world's numerous semi-strange cars, or should they hold out for a genuine Saab? Not a choice to be taken lightly.Saabs have always been way out on the weirdness asymptote, cars so far removed from the conventional that most people simply can't understand them and only a few care to.
The body's silence and the suspension's uncommon resilience also make the Saab one of the best rough-road cars you can find. The wheels are allowed plenty of vertical travel; there is relatively little rubber in the suspension, so the wheels are not steering in unwanted directions as a result of bushing deflection as they hammer over bumps; and the shock absorbers are sufficiently restrictive to keep the wheels on the road and the body level.
