Rep. Tim Burchett is calling for an end to US foreign aid that he believes is reaching the Taliban.
A Tennessee congressman expressed a desire Thursday to work with the incoming Trump administration to stop public funds he claims are going to members of the Taliban . Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., wrote in a letter to President-elect Donald Trump, which he shared via X Monday, that he has “strong concerns with foreign aid being funneled to the Taliban .” “The United States of America should not fund its enemies abroad.
I implore you to take action to put an end to wasteful foreign aid spending and to support efforts in Congress to put Americans first,” the letter reads. “I look forward to working with you during your second term as President.” The lawmaker said he learned over the last two years the U.S. Department of State was funneling money to the Taliban. State Secretary Antony Blinken admitted last year non-governmental organizations paid nearly $10 million in taxes to the Taliban, according to Rep. Burchett. “The larger issue, which Secretary Blinken failed to acknowledge, is the shipments of cash payments in United States dollars to Afghanistan’s central bank,” the congressman explained. “These cash shipments are auctioned off and after that, they are nearly impossible to track.” That is how the Taliban receives funds and distributes money around the world, according to the lawmaker. Rep. Burchett wrote he plans to reintroduce a bill which would require the State Department to discourage other countries from providing material support to the Taliban. The legislation would also force the department to report on direct-cash assistance programs, as well as the Taliban’s influence over Afghanistan’s central bank, the congressman noted. He said then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., refused to bring the bill to a vote in 2023. The Trump-Vance transition team, the State Department and Sen. Schumer each did not immediately return requests for comment from The National News Desk (TNND)
