“Love will make you do crazy things,” the “King Richard” star told the audience while accepting the Best Actor trophy minutes after the shocking incident.
“I want to apologize to all of my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment, and I’m not crying for winning an award,” Smith, 53, said as he“It’s not about winning an award for me; it’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people,” he continued.
He then thanked the Academy and admitted he hopes to be invited back after the incident with Rock, to whom he notably did not apologize. Rock, looking shocked, kept his cool, saying, “Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me” before defending what was “just a ‘G.I. Jane’ joke.”
