The Texas Education Agency will open applications next week for community members to serve on the South San Antonio ISD board.
After giving the dysfunctional South San Antonio Independent School District board a year to clean up its act, the Texas Education Agency informed trustees Thursday that the search is on for their replacements. But that doesn’t mean a state-appointed board of managers will take over the district anytime soon. In a letter sent to the board this week, Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said he has not yet determined if a full-blown state takeover is warranted.
In his letter to the commissioner, Saavedra said board president Manuel Lopez ignored his recommendation that they host a series of community meetings earlier this year to educate residents about the responsibilities of a school board member. Months later, the November board election was canceled because three incumbents — and no challengers — filed to run for their board seats and only one community member filed for the remaining open seat.
