Asia Prudhomme takes a free throw during East Central’s game against Steele High School at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, on Feb. 7, 2023. In November, Prudhomme was the target of racially charged taunts when at the free throw line at an away game at Marble Falls. The incident thrust the quiet and kind hearted Prudhomme into a national spotlight. Her team and coaches have supported her throughout her senior year as her perspective on the world has been challenged.
The raucous atmosphere combined with Villarreal being issued a technical foul for what she thought was loose officiating elevated the emotions. When she was a baby, Asia spent several weeks in the hospital with meningitis. Her grandmother is unsure if that was the cause of Asia’s hearing loss. “I’m a quiet kid,” Asia said. “I don’t talk that much in class. Just being asked questions or being called out to the front of the class makes me nervous. … Now, that I’m older, I realize how important it is for people to know about my hearing.”As much as she hurt, Asia was concerned for grandparents, who adopted her and her older sister Deja.
