The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati offers a step back in time, a stroll through a vast repository of high-wattage nostalgia, from Burma Shave to Sunoco to Sherwin Williams.

“This is where nostalgia goes to retire,” said Alex Anderson, the museum’s tour manager. “It’s a glimpse into the past.” The museum is organized roughly chronologically, covering the sign industry from the 1870s through 1980s, from simple wood images to early illuminated works to neon, plastic and more.

“This is how the United States used to look – big and bright,” she said. “It’s overstimulation in the most fun way.” * A 1950s-era Holiday Inn Great Sign, with its curved yellow arrow and sparkling top star, an icon of the American road trip. Holiday Inn retired the sign in 1982 during a rebranding, instructing hotels to destroy the signs. The museum’s sign, acquired in 2002 and restored in 2023, is displayed outside and may be the last authentic one in existence.
