Facing threats from China , Taiwan has reportedly developed a new hypersonic missile named Qingtian, capable of traveling at speeds of Mach 6. The missile boasts a range exceeding 1243 miles (2000 kilometers) and is being mass-produced. It is expected to enter service with the Army soon. Taiwan is also working on a system to deploy the missile from mobile launchers, engaging in talks with Czech and American firms for this purpose.
Qingtian builds upon previous programs like Yunfeng and Yungeng II, offering advanced features in range, speed, and operational flexibility. The missile's development was spearheaded by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) and supported by the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense's ‘National Defense Advanced Technology Research Plan.’ Taiwan is exploring the use of Czech-made Tatra Force 12X12 trucks as a mobile platform due to their off-road capabilities, adaptability to mountainous terrain, and maneuverability. The Mach 6 speed will make it challenging for enemy air defense systems to track and intercept the missile. This development comes after Taiwan previously developed the Yun Feng supersonic land-attack cruise missile in the past decade, with a range of 745 miles (1,200 km) and an extended range variant exceeding 1,243 miles. Powered by a ramjet engine with a solid-fueled booster, it became operational in 2014 and entered serial production in 2019. China's increasing pressure on Taiwan and its neighbors in the Indo-Pacific region has accelerated Taiwan's pursuit of a hypersonic missile system
