Despite there being plenty of ways to find shelters, homeless residents say Mayor Johnston's House1000 plan makes sweeps the only way into decent housing.
A homeless Denver resident pulls a wagon full of his stuff onto the sidewalk as Denver police begin forcing people to leave an encampment at 18th Avenue and Logan Street. The residents of homeless encampments that get cleaned up by the city often remark on how disruptive the process is, and how it leaves them with no place to go.
"We did learn something from this site, which was that once we went to talk to the residents at that encampment to tell them we were moving them to housing, word got out," he said. "There were another fifteen, twenty, 25 people who then showed up at that site believing they would have access to housing."
But according to some of those residents, the only way to find decent housing is to be in the right place at the right time — during one of Johnston's sweeps. The people involved in the Governor's Mansion sweep, for instance, balked at the idea of moving to a shelter because of concerns about safety, cleanliness and not being able to take all of their belongings. Still, the city insists that shelters are the way to go.
"I would've have liked to be put in one of those rooms [at the Best Western]," he said after the Governor's Mansion sweep. Johnston has been making an effort to change the terminology used for city cleanups, though he's not consistent.

Johnston calls for clear pathway for critical mineralsWestern Australian Mines and Petroleum, Energy, Hydrogen Industry and Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston has called on the federal government to develop a clear pathway to support the development of downstream processing in critical minerals, without forgetting the importance of mining. “I think it's good that the Commonwealth government is systematically addressing the critical minerals space, and I don't want to be seen to be unnecessarily critical. However, I suppose the East Coast of Australia doesn't understand how advanced Western Australia already is in the critical minerals space,” Johnston told delegates at the Australian Nickel conference, in Perth.
